Artist Statement
There are a few main things that inspire my art. The pain and trauma of my past, curiosity in the present, and hope for the future. There’s just as much fun in my work as there is some amount of melancholy. And I think there's beauty in that.
Through my art I explore the depths and complexity of my inner self, my spirituality, political beliefs, my race, and my place in the black community. My style has developed organically but is largely defined through experimentation and play with the only consistency being that I am perpetually inconsistent. I seek a level of resonance in my work that remains regardless of whether the observer fully understands what they're seeing.
It's not like I click a magic button and suddenly there's art. Oh no, the process is quite different. My canvas is my drawing tablet. My paint is on a color wheel. And my brushes are all digital, and some even custom-created to simulate or get as close to the real things they're patterned after.
I try to let my art do all the talking so you're not going to find too much in the way of descriptions around here. However, every piece you see does have a story. Some are lighthearted, some are much darker. The feeling you get when you see one of them is generally a good indicator of the tone of the story behind the piece, more often than not.
